How does Home Sharing Work?
HomeShare provides an easy way to find a tenant for over 30-day stays. Most hosts are retirees who have extra space in their homes, and delight in the idea of sharing it with a younger person, while also making some extra income every month.
How does a task exchange work?
Incorporating tasks is an optional feature tailored to meet the needs of each homeshare. Hosts indicate optional or required tasks they would like help with on their listings and prospective housemates can receive reduced rent in exchange for assisting with such tasks.
What tasks cannot be exchanged?
Guests should not provide the following services in exchange for reduced rent:
- Changing clothes
- Bathroom assistance (bathing, toileting)
- Bathing
- Drug administration
- Nail clipping
How long does the average HomeShare last?
HomeShare is designed to be flexible to meet your needs. While all arrangements must be for a minimum of 30 days, homeshares can last for as long as one year before initiating a renewal.
How do I know if I am eligible?
HomeShare is designed to meet the demand for intergenerational matches, however anyone over the age of 18 is eligible to apply. Please read our Guide to Homesharing to better understand what it means to join our community.
What information should I include on my listing?
In the listing creation process, we’ll ask specific questions about your room, home and preferences. The information you choose to share is entirely up to you. We recommend including as much detail as possible as this helps guests learn more about you and your space.
Does the BC Residential Tenancy Act apply to HomeShare?
No, this law does not apply in situations where the tenant shares a bathroom or kitchen with the owner of the property or where a tenant rents out a bedroom to a roommate.
What if the match doesn’t work out and I want the person to move out?
The occupant must be given reasonable notice by the owner or tenant they rent from to vacate. 30 days written notice is standard.
It’s helpful to have a written HomeShare agreement that outlines the terms of the living arrangement, including how the tenancy will end.
Can I remain anonymous while I’m looking to host someone on my property or in my house?
Yes, we will contact hosts with potential matches. You only connect with those who you are interested in meeting.
